Privacy Policy — Wiretap Audio Recorder
Last updated: 21 June 2026
Wiretap Audio Recorder (“the extension”) is a Chrome extension that records the audio
playing in a browser tab and/or your microphone, and saves it on your device. This policy
explains exactly what data the extension touches.
Summary
- Your recordings never leave your computer. Audio is captured and saved
locally in your browser (IndexedDB). We have no server and we never upload, stream,
or see your audio.
- We do not collect analytics, track you, or show ads.
- We do not sell or share any personal data.
- The only network request the extension makes is to Gumroad, to
verify a Pro license key you choose to enter.
What the extension accesses, and why
- Tab audio — captured only while you are recording, and only for the tab
you choose. It is written to local storage on your device.
- Microphone — used only when you start a microphone (or tab + mic)
recording. Audio stays on your device. You are asked for the standard Chrome microphone
permission the first time.
- Local storage — your recordings, your last capture, your theme choice,
and (if you activate Pro) your license key and Pro status are stored locally so the
extension can work and remember your settings.
- Clipboard (read) — only when you press the “paste” button on the license
field, to paste your license key. Nothing else on your clipboard is read or stored.
- Downloads — used to save a recording to your computer when you click
Save/Download.
License verification (Gumroad)
If you purchase Pro and enter your license key, the extension sends that key to Gumroad’s
license API (api.gumroad.com) to confirm your subscription is active. This is the
extension’s only outbound network request. We do not run our own server and do not receive a
copy of your data. Gumroad’s handling of your purchase is governed by
Gumroad’s Privacy Policy.
Data retention & deletion
Recordings and settings stay on your device until you delete them (delete a recording from the
archive, or remove/clear the extension’s data). Uninstalling the extension removes its local
data.
Children
The extension is not directed to children under 13.
